Thursday, 5/12/16: Regrouping

Apologies for the missed post.  I just noticed that I didn't put anything up for Wednesday.

Wednesday I saw Period 6, and today I saw Period 5.  From here on out, we are not on a block schedule.

Although we have been doing Algebra 1 this year, we've had to Ping-Pong back and forth the last month dealing with the high stakes testing.  First, it was the state testing in math (SBAC), where the students needed to be ready with their eighth grade math standards.  Then more recently, it was the high school district's math placement test, a summative exam for our year of Algebra 1.  Now that we're done with both, it's back to our district's scope and sequence.  Our final Unit 5 will be on statistics.

However, we will have a detour the first of next week.  We jammed in the Unit 4 test, on transformational geometry, the Pythagorean theorem, and the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres, just before the standardized testing.  We had so much going on at the time that I told students to keep their eyes on the SBAC first, and then the high school exam.  I told them that the Unit 4 was not our top priority, that we would come back and revisit it.  We'll be doing so the first of next week.  Although I have the scores for this test up in the portal, students will have the chance to revisit their learning and revise their grades upward on this assessment.

There is one more recent memorization quiz, on key Algebra 1 concepts, that I need to get into the portal, as well as recent homework.  All of this will have a positive impact on grades; they aren't going any lower now than they presently are.

Tonight's homework for both classes is from a photocopy packet that I distributed to students, on Lesson 12-1, Two-Way Tables.  Students are to do pages 415-416 (7-16), which is all of the problems front-and-back of the last page of the packet.

Students, please remember that you need to have pages 411-478 with you in class tomorrow, 5/13.

Also, parents, my students know that the final after-school class we'd planned, for tomorrow, 5/13, has been cancelled.  It became pointless when we had to get the high school test completed by this week.

Thanks!
