Thursday, 5/12/16: Regrouping

Apologies for the missed post.  I just noticed that I didn't put anything up for Wednesday.

Wednesday I saw Period 6, and today I saw Period 5.  From here on out, we are not on a block schedule.

Although we have been doing Algebra 1 this year, we've had to Ping-Pong back and forth the last month dealing with the high stakes testing.  First, it was the state testing in math (SBAC), where the students needed to be ready with their eighth grade math standards.  Then more recently, it was the high school district's math placement test, a summative exam for our year of Algebra 1.  Now that we're done with both, it's back to our district's scope and sequence.  Our final Unit 5 will be on statistics.

However, we will have a detour the first of next week.  We jammed in the Unit 4 test, on transformational geometry, the Pythagorean theorem, and the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres, just before the standardized testing.  We had so much going on at the time that I told students to keep their eyes on the SBAC first, and then the high school exam.  I told them that the Unit 4 was not our top priority, that we would come back and revisit it.  We'll be doing so the first of next week.  Although I have the scores for this test up in the portal, students will have the chance to revisit their learning and revise their grades upward on this assessment.

There is one more recent memorization quiz, on key Algebra 1 concepts, that I need to get into the portal, as well as recent homework.  All of this will have a positive impact on grades; they aren't going any lower now than they presently are.

Tonight's homework for both classes is from a photocopy packet that I distributed to students, on Lesson 12-1, Two-Way Tables.  Students are to do pages 415-416 (7-16), which is all of the problems front-and-back of the last page of the packet.

Students, please remember that you need to have pages 411-478 with you in class tomorrow, 5/13.

Also, parents, my students know that the final after-school class we'd planned, for tomorrow, 5/13, has been cancelled.  It became pointless when we had to get the high school test completed by this week.

Thanks!

Tuesday, 5/10/16: Whittier Union High School District Math Assessment

Today, my Per.5 class took the W.U.H.S.D. math assessment.  I did not see Per.6 today.  No homework is presently assigned.

Monday, 5/9/16: Whittier Union High School District Math Assessment

Today my Per.6 class took the WUHSD math assessment.  Period 5 will take it tomorrow:

Several parents have contacted me about whether the WUHSD math assessment is taken at the high school or in my classroom.  Although I've been discussing it for a long time with my students, I apologize for the lack of clarity here.  The test will be given in my classroom, not at the high school:
The Whittier Union High School District math assessment (a major criterion in math placement for next year) will occur Monday, May 9 for my Per. 6 honors class, and Tuesday, May 10 for my Per. 5 honors class.  It is very important that students avoid appointments that afternoon, if at all possible, and clear their calendars for after-school.  (Students will have roughly a hour and a half of class time to work on this test, but I will stay after school until 4:00 or so if they need additional time after school for this test.  Students must complete this test in the same day.)

We will be on a block schedule Monday through Thursday this week for the language arts state standardized testing.

Period 5:  Your homework is to get a good-night's sleep!  :)

Friday, 3/18/16: Laying Out Unit 4 Threads

Unit 4 involves congruence, similarity, and angle relationships--all tied together through the thread of transformational geometry (translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations).  It also involves the Pythagorean theorem and volume of cones, spheres, and pyramids.  Having successfully completed Unit 3 on quadratic equations and functions, and exponential functions, we've had several days to lay out these "threads" of thought which interconnect.  I have to make sure that the students understand the basic concepts and vocabulary here, but we're moving quickly.

While the music students are in Boston I am going to use the week of 3/29 to review 8th grade standards.  I will be speaking with the Boston attendees when they return about this material to be practiced; unfortunately I did not have time to set this up before the trip.  No formal work is assigned during the break, but know that this is the structure for Unit 4:
  • transformations & similarity (Module 10)
  • Pythagorean theorem (Module 12)
  • volume (Module 13)
  • transformations and congruence (Module 9)

FOR EWMSIMP STUDENTS SEIZING THE TERRIFIC OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN BOSTON:

Cal High distributed their registration materials to students Thursday, 3/17.  (I've heard that La Serna's materials have also been mailed out.)  The "Course Selection Form" (the blue sheet for Cal High; traditionally Whittier's has been gold in color, and La Serna's pink) and the "Enrollment Form" (parents are enrolling their students into a new school district for next year, the Whittier Union High School District) are due back at the Future Frosh Night (student / parent meeting at the high school) Thursday, 3/31; or if the parents cannot attend, to Cal High's Guidance office the following day, Friday, 4/1.  This is while the students are in Boston.  We are likely to have the same situation with Whittier High School and La Serna High School.
Accordingly:

For parents not accompanying the trip:  they can still attend the 3/31 parent meeting and turn in the two forms that night.  Alternately, a relative or family friend can attend and turn in the form.  If parents are not chaperoning the Boston trip, then they must take responsibility to return the forms to Cal High's Guidance Office by Friday, 4/1.  (The same would apply to Whittier and La Serna, whatever their instructions are.)

For parents who are accompanying the Boston trip or who are otherwise out of town the entire week of 3/28:
  • Best scenario:  have a relative or family friend turn in the forms for you.
  • Alternately, students can give the two forms to Mrs. Carnahan at next Tuesday morning's rehearsal.  She will forward the forms to me.  I will drive the forms over to the high school the week after spring break, so that they are delivered on time.  I am ONLY doing this as a courtesy for parents accompanying the Boston trip or who are otherwise out-of-town the whole week of 3/28.  I will not take on the responsibility for any high school forms, EXCEPT in this circumstance.

Tuesday, 2/23/16: Preparing for Unit 3 Test on Quadratics and Exponentials

Both of my two honors classes now feel strong on what makes up almost the entire first-half of the upcoming Unit 3 test (date to be determined).  (We've been working off of parallel practice versions.)  We are now focusing on the second half of the test.  Tonight's homework is Practice #3, problems 7 & 8.

Monday, 2/22/16: Preparing for Unit 3 Test on Quadratics and Exponentials

Because there has been so much packed into Unit 3, it has been a struggle for many students as we work to come in prepared into our Unit 3 test.  I'm repeatedly emphasizing what I want students to really know in the midst of so much content.  This upcoming test (for which I don't have a date yet, but will occur as soon as we are ready) marks the content I really want the students to know out of this unit.

A number of students and parents have communicated with me about the struggle, which I appreciate.

Today we have a beach-head established.  Both of my two honors classes now feel strong on what makes up almost the entire first-half of the test.  (We've been working off of parallel practice versions.)  Tomorrow we'll move toward accomplishing the same with the rest of the test.  Tonight's homework is the front page of Practice #3.  (Both classes: skip #5 at the bottom--there is a problem with it.  Both classes, we'll start with that problem and move forward after checking the answers from tonight's assignment.)

Friday, 2/19/16: Preparing for Unit 3 Test on Quadratics and Functions

We are in the process of preparing for the upcoming Unit 3 test.  I don't have a firm date for it yet, as I want my students solidly coming in from a position of strength.  Students should continue to study / practice for the test, on Modules (short chapters) 16, 17, 10, and 11.

Thursday, 2/18/16: Independent Work on Practice #2, Unit 3 Test on Quadratics & Exponentials

Apologies for the missed post yesterday.

Today I was out for an articulation meeting at La Serna High School today.  We are in the process of preparing for our Unit 3 Test.  Students should continue to study / practice for the test, on Modules (short chapters) 16, 17, 10, and 11.

Tuesday, 2/16/16: Preparing for Unit 3 Test on Quadratics and Exponentials

Our Unit 3 test will be next Tuesday, 2/23, and Wednesday, 2/24.  This week we are in the process of reviewing two very parallel practice versions of the test.  Parents, last Friday we diagrammed the first practice, labeling questions with the associated topics, and listing the "modules" (short chapters) that are on the test.

Tonight's homework is for students to work the second half (last 10 problems) of the first practice test.  We will review the answers / work tomorrow during class.

Friday, 2/12/16: Preparing for Unit 3 Test on Quadratic and Exponential Functions

This weekend's homework is the first ten problems of the Unit 3 Practice Test, which I distributed to students today.  Students are to work the first three multiple-choice problems, 1-3, followed by the first seven short-answer problems, 1-7.  We will be reviewing this material all next week; our test will be on Monday, 2/22.

Period 5, I had the notation reversed when we made our assignment sheet entry, saying "SA 1-3, and MC 1-7."  It's the other way around, as noted above:  "MC 1-3, and SA 1-7."  SORRY!!

Have a terrific Valentine's Day / President's Day weekend!

Tuesday, 2/9/16 through Friday, 2/12/16: Unit 3 Performance Task

The "Performance Task" portion of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) standardized testing (coming up in several months) gives students the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency primarily in three of the four "claims" involved with reporting standardized test scores.  These three are Claim 2: Problem Solving; Claim 3: Communicating Reasoning; and Claim 4: Modeling and Data Analysis.  (Claim 1 is "Concepts and Procedures.")

The format for the performance task is that students are given a scenario (such as running a business), followed by about 6 or so questions related to the task at hand.  The goal of this part of the assessment is not necessarily to test the students' knowledge of their math skills, but more to assess their ability to apply them in context, as they are expected to do so in high school, college or university, and in the real world.

As we did with the end of Unit 1, this week we are having our students on individual computers taking our district's own Unit 3 math performance task.  Today we did the "classroom activity," designed to make sure that students understand the context of the problem.  Wednesday and Thursday students will be on the computers taking the performance task.  Friday we will debrief, which is the most critical part of this exercise.

As we are between units and performing this important task this week, no specific homework assignments will be given during the week.

However, next week we will be taking the Unit 3 test (traditional type).  It will be on quadratic and exponential functions, covering the lessons in modules (short-chapters) 17, 10, and 11.  For their homework this week, students should be reviewing all of this material.  There is a LOT in there!!

Because of a heavy load for the Instrumental Music Program students the next several weeks, our next scheduled Friday after-school class won't be until February 26, for Per.6.

Thursday, 2/4/16: Lesson 10-5, Equations Involving Exponents

Tonight's homework is p..371 (1-10).  Students may use a graphing calculator in completing this assignment.

This Friday's after-school class is for Per.5.

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Wednesday, 2/3/16: Lesson 10-4, Characteristics of Exponential Functions When Adjusting Parameters

Tonight's homework is for students to study the handout I gave them for Lesson 10-4, and use a graphing calculator (or online graphing calculator or app; Desmos is a great choice) to run through some of the examples.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Tuesday, 2/2/16: Lesson 10-3, on Geometric Sequences

Today we revisited how to write recursive and explicit rules for geometric sequences.  No formal homework was assigned for tonight, but students can go back and study Section 10-3.

Thursday, 1/29/16: Reviewing Recent Functions Homework

No formal homework is assigned for tonight.

Period 5, you didn't get the message, but I am assigning p.342 (5 & 7) from Lesson 10-1 this weekend.  Also, you didn't get the message that since we're starting Modules 10 & 11 tomorrow, you need to bring in p.331 - p.404.  Per.6 got the message and will bring in those pages tomorrow.  For your class, Per.5, I will photocopy the Lesson 10-1 pages.

For anyone who is trying to do the weekend's homework tonight, while this is not the easiest section in the book, the problems I assigned are VERY parallel to the examples in Lesson 10-1.  If you study these examples well, you should have no problems.  It depends on the problem, but you may really want to use a calculator.  (You can use a calculator for terminating fractions like 1/4, 1/2, 3/5, etc.  DON'T use a calculator for repeating fractions like 1/3, 4/9, etc.  Tough out the pencil / paper scratch work in this case.)

This Friday's after-school class is for Per.6.

Monday, 1/25/16: Lesson 17-5, More on Graphing Quadratic Functions

Tonight's homework is from Lesson 17-5.  For tonight, students are to do:
  • p.662 #2
  • p.663 #3
  • p.666 #1
  • p.667 #6 & #7

Friday, 1/22/16: Lesson 17-4 Homework, Characteristics of Quadratic Functions

Today students took their quiz on the derivation of the quadratic formula, and we reviewed the homework problems assigned last night.  We've been pushing extremely hard, but we needed to pull up to review the material--particularly problems 17 & 18 on p.660.  No homework is assigned over the weekend.  Monday we will pick up with Lesson 17-5, graphing quadratic functions in standard and vertex forms.

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Wednesday, 1/20/16: Lesson 17-3 The Vertex Form of Quadratic Functions

Tonight's homework is p.645 (9,10), and p.648 (1-3).  This is a challenging lesson, but the textbook examples we looked at today were well laid out.

I'm encouraging students to download a QR reader code app, and use it to scan (and immediately jump to the appropriate instructional video) the QR codes in the text.  A number of students at our school are already taking advantage of this great resource.

Tuesday, 1/19/16: Stretching, Compressing, and Reflecting Quadratic Functions

Tonight's homework is from Lesson 7-2.  It is p.637 (2,3), p.639 (4,5), and p.640 (1,2).  These six graphs, along with another entrance ticket to Friday's quiz, are due Wednesday.  Students, you may make the graphs directly into the textbook pages, but use your spiral notebooks to make the tables (t-charts).  It is okay to use a calculator with the computation.

Friday, 1/15/16: Quadratic Functions: Translations of the Parent Quadratic Function

Wishing all of you a meaningful holiday, in memory of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King.

This weekend's homework is p.631, #9, and p.633 (#6-9).  Students also have another entrance ticket as they prepare for the next memorization quiz, the derivation of the quadratic formula, which will be Friday, 1/22.

Thursday, January 14, 2016

Thursday, 1/14/16: Reviewing Quadratic Formula Homework

Tonight's homework is from the textbook pages, p.629 (2-5), on vertical shifts of the graphs of quadratic functions.

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

Wednesday, 1/13/16: The Quadratic Formula

Apologies for the missed post yesterday.

Tonight's homework is from a photocopy which I distributed today, with "13-4" on the top left.  Students are to solve problems 1-3, and 15-18 by using the quadratic formula.

Monday, January 11, 2016

Monday, 1/11/16: Reviewing Completing the Square Homework

No formal homework was assigned tonight, although as a preview activity tonight, students can research the "derivation of the quadratic formula," or just "quadratic formula."  We will be doing that Tuesday.

Friday, January 8, 2016

Friday, 1/8/16: Completing the Square

Tonight's homework is from a photocopy I distributed to the students yesterday.  The photocopy has "13-3" in the upper-left corner.  Students have problems 13-19 from this photocopy as this weekend's homework; they need to solve these quadratics using the completing the square method (NOT factoring/ZPP on this assignment).

Thursday, 1/7/16: Taking the Square Root Both Sides

There are four strategies for solving quadratic equations:
  • Factoring / Zero Product Property
    • GCF / Distributive Property
    • Difference of Squares
    • Perfect Square Trinomials
    • Factoring by Grouping
    • Diamond Trash
  • Taking the square root both sides
  • Completing the square
  • Quadratic formula
I'm repeatedly hammering away at the five factoring strategies.  Parents, your son or daughter should be able to repeat the five factoring strategies (GCF, etc.) to you off of the top of their head.  If he or she can't, lock him or her into a room until he or she can!  Every year my students leave here knowing those strategies like the back of one's hand.

Your son or daughter won't necessarily be able to state the four ways of solving a quadratic equation yet, but should be able to do so by mid week.  I'm really hammering these four strategies (factoring, taking square root, etc.) home now.

We've been in review mode with all of the above this week, to get students' heads back into these strategies.  Today I got a chance to strengthen the second strategy for solving quadratic equations, taking the square root both sides.  Tomorrow and Monday, it will be a solid presentation of completing the square and Tuesday and Wednesday of next week it will be a solid presentation of the quadratic formula, including its derivation.  (In fact students have to know the derivation by memory, and that will be my first quiz this semester, given the week after next.)

We're between lessons and it was counterproductive for me to formally assign work tonight.  But I'll be assigning completing the square homework over the weekend.  Tonight, students can be previewing lessons 16-4 and 16-5, on pages 587 - 602.

There is an after-school class for Per.6 tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 8, until 4:00.

Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Wednesday, 1/6/16: Review of Factoring Strategies / Solving Quadratic Equations

Tonight's homework is from a photocopy I distributed to students yesterday, entitled "Factoring / Quadratic Review."  Students are to work problems 14-26 even to the best of their ability tonight.  We ran out of time today, but I still need the students to play with the problems tonight so that I can keep us on schedule.  We'll definitely review them tomorrow, so students should just try their best tonight.

Tuesday, 1/5/16: Review of Factoring Strategies and Solving Quadratic Equations

Tonight's homework is from a photocopy I distributed to students, "Factoring and Solving Quadratic Equations."  Students are to work problems 2 - 12, even, from this photocopy.  (We did the parallel odd-numbered problems in class today.)
